You know, it started as well as Federer could hope.  He was hitting awesome, got an early break, and it looked like all the good play from beating Murray would carry over to Djokovic.  But, just as he’s accomplished similar feats against Nadal, his opponent, this time Djokovic, clawed his way back, some based on his own good hitting, and some based on errors by Federer.
The break was recovered, and the first set went to a tiebreak which Djokovic won.

In the second set, Federer got to another break lead, and was riding that, but at 5-4, 40-15, he couldn’t close out the set, and Djokovic again broke back.  Djok0vic held moderately easily, despite Federer coming oh-so-close to another break point, but being unable to create that opportunity.  Federer then found himself in another battle, and was down match point this time.  Trying to save the match at 30-40, Federer set up a good hard inside-out forehand, came to net, only to see Djokovic thread a low pass down the line, one that Federer was unable to recover from.

And so Djokovic finally closes out the year with a win, and this means Federer, who had 1500 points from this event last year, will leave with around 700 points this go-around, and Djokovic, who finished undefeated, picks up 1500 points and solidifies his hold onto number 1.  At least Federer has broken the weeks at number 1 record, something no one thought he’d be able to do.

The match was officiated by Lars Graff in his last tournament as chair umpire.  He’s been chair umpire for almost 20 years.
