Serena Williams has made it official – she is out for the season.

The former world number one announced the news that she was pulling out of the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships and the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas final on Tuesday.

Not that many of us expected anything different. After all, the last half of this year she has been claiming to start up again for the next tournament, then just a few days later saying she is withdrawing from that tournament.

“It is with deep frustration that I am withdrawing from the WTA Championships at Doha and the Fed Cup Final,” Williams said in a statement on her official website.

“Pushed by my desire to return to competition, I trained too hard too soon and re-tore the tendon in my foot. As a result, yesterday morning I had to have another procedure to repair it. I thank everyone for their continued support during this difficult time and look forward with strength and determination to getting back on the court.”

She is next expected to compete at the Hopman Cup in Perth, Australia with American teammate John Isner. Do any of us believe that will happen?
