Ian Plays Singles Points

April 27, 2010 by: Ian Westermann

I finally got out to hit a couple tennis balls today! This video shows a few baseline points that Louis and I played after I filmed some specific strokes for instructional videos. Comments are welcomed.

    Nice tennis!

You play a classic backhand slice approach shot at around 1:30 followed by a straightforward volley into the deuce court.

It’s interesting where you play that volley; you’re inside the service boxes, but still some distance from the net. I have a tendency to run too far towards the net and leave myself open to being lobbed, so I’m going to try and be extra careful not to come in too close to the net after an approach shot next time (obviously it depends to some extent on the quality of the approach and the quality of the opponents passing shot or lob or whatever…

    Thanks!

Hey Ian, new to your website and I think its great. I was watching this video and noticed you were playing on my home courts. I had to do a double take, but those are the courts (in my neighborhood) I practice on all the time. Tell me if I am wrong but were you in Urbana? If you remember that is. 4.0 to 4.5 player

    • Yup, that’s them! I’ve actually only ever played on them that ONE time, was convenient for some reason or other. I live in New Market, about 5 miles away.

I use that racket! Very dependable. I enjoyed watching your volleys, a good model to emulate.

Would have been good to have seen some points with serve. Top tip try and play as many points as possible starting with the serve. Too many practise sessions are played without serve when playing points.

    • I agree, players should practice with their serve more often, excellent point.

This video is categorized under “for fun”, I wasn’t really trying to make any instructional assertions.

Hey Ian! It’s fun, and instructional, to see you demonstrate on court all of the aspects of tennis that you have been sharing in your audio podcasts. Over the past couple of years I’ve been listening to you speak about everything from footwork, grips, topspin, pronation, strategy, etc, and as I watch you play, I can practically hear your words. It’s good to see and hear this information for the sake of learning. Good job and thanks!

Thanks for the kind words, Dan. I’m really happy that you’ve been enjoying the content here!
