Dementieva – Safina rematch

Elena Dementieva photo Elena Dementieva of Russia has set up a rematch of the Olympic final with fellow Russian Dinara Safina. They are meeting in the championship match of the 2009 Medibank International in Sydney, Australia.

Dementieva reached the final with an impressive straight-sets win over the No. 1 seed, Serena Williams, 6-3, 6-1.

In the Olympic final, Dementieva defeated Safina in a close 3-set match, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. It should be an interesting rematch as both players prepare for the Australian Open beginning next week.

Jankovic seeded No. 1 for Australian Open

Jelena Jankovic photoSerbian tennis cutie pie, Jelena Jankovic, has received the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Australian Open slated to begin Jan 19 in Sidney. As the current No. 1 ranked female tennis player in the world, it makes sense to seed her No. 1 in the first Grand Slam of the year. Jankovic reached the semifinals of the Australian Open last year.

Noticeably absent from the tournament this year are No. 9 ranked Maria Sharapova due to a lingering shoulder problem, and No. 28 Na Li of China, because of a knee injury.

Sharapova withdraws from Australian Open

Maria Sharapova photoThe squeals and shrieks of Russian cutie pie, Maria Sharapova, will be missing from the 2009 Australian Open Tournament. She has withdrawn from the event claiming she just has not had enough training time since her shoulder injury sidelined her last season.

At MariaSharapova.com, she explains, “I am very sorry to announce that I am not going to be able to defend my title at this year’s Australian Open. My shoulder is doing great, but I just started training a few weeks ago and I am just not near the level I need to be to compete at the highest levels.”

Wozniacki advances to Quarterfinals

Caroline Wozniacki photoCaroline Wozniacki, cutie pie from Denmark, advanced to the Quarterfinals of the WTA ASB Classic being held in Auckland, New Zealand.

Wozniacki was the 2nd seed in the tournament. She had an easy win over No. 172 ranked Alberta Brianti of Italy, 6-1, 6-0. In the second round, she defeated No. 64 ranked Jill Craybas of the USA 6-4, 7-5. The quarterfinals against No. 76 ranked Elena Vesnina of Russia turned into a see-saw 3-set match, with Vesnina coming out on top 6-3, 0-6, 6-3.

Dementieva dominates and wins championship!

Elena Dementieva photoRussian cutie pie, Elena Dementieva, holds her trophy after wining the championship match of the 2009 WTA ASB Classic played in Auckland, New Zealand January 5- 11. In the final match, No. 4 ranked Dementieva defeated fellow Russian, No. 63 ranked Elena Vesnina.

Dementieva lived up to her No. 1 seeding, never dropping a set along the way. Her opponents Yung-Jan Chan, Marina Erakovic, Shahar Peer, Aravane Rezai, and finally Elena Vesnina didn’t really have a chance as Dementieva dismissed them right and left in orderly fashion.

Vaidisova makes it to second round

Nicole Vaidisova photoGerman born cutie pie, Nicole Vaidisova, was beaten out in the second round of the WTA ASB Classic currently under way in Auckland, New Zealand. She is shown here playing a forehand against Elena Vesnina who defeated her.

Vaidisova was the 6th seed in the tournament. She had a close 3-set match in the first round against No. 68 ranked Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia. Viadisova came out on top, 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 7-5 in that match. No. 76 ranked Elena Vesnina of the Ukraine then ousted her in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 in the next round.

Dementieva advances to Final

Elena Dementieva photoRussian cutie pie, Elena Dementieva, has advanced to the final of the WTA ASB Classic being held in Auckland, New Zealand January 5-11. She will face No. 76 ranked Elena Vesnina of the Ukraine in the championship match.

Dementieva, the 1st seed in the tournament, was pushed to 7-5 in her first set, but then did not allowed an opponent more than three games in a set through the first four matches in this tournament. In other words, all matches have been rather easy straight set wins.

Ivanovic through 1st round

Ivanovic. the No. 1 seed in the tournament, is through the first round of the 2009 WTA Brisbane International being played in Brisbane, Australia. She defeated No. 48 ranked Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic convincingly in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Ivanovic is currently ranked No. 5. She needs a strong showing to prove her down-ward year-end slide is over. She need to convince herself and many of her disappointed fans that she belongs at the top.

Hantuchova upset by Errani in 1st round

The first round of the new season produced an early upset as No. 21 ranked Slovakian cutie pie, Daniela Hantuchova, was upset 7-6(7-1), 4-6, 0-6 by No. 41 ranked Sara Errani of Italy. They are playing in the 2009 WTA Brisbane International in Brisbane, Australia.

It was tough for Hantuchova from the start, as the underdog, Errani, pushed her to a tie-break in the first set. Hantuchova was able to win the tie-break, but that was the end of the story. Errani took the final two sets, blanking Hantuchova in the final set.

Ivanovic seeded # 1

Ana Ivanovic photoAre you ready tennis fans? Finally the new tennis season is here. Tennis fans around the world have been anxiously waiting for the new season, to see who will take control and claim the number one spot on both the men’s and the women’s sides.

The first tournament of the year is the WTA Brisbane International held in Brisbane, Australia Jan 4-11. And I’m happy, because my favorite cutie pie, Ana Ivanovic, shown in the photo is seeded No. 1. One other featured cutie pie is also seeded at No. 4, Daniela Hantuchova.
