The Sony Ericsson Championships Are Under Way
Dinara Safina regained the World No. 1 ranking on Monday, October 26, 2009, taking over the spot from Serena Williams just in time for the Sony Ericsson Championships, which begins play on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009.
The Sony Ericsson Championships is a unique tournament, both in the way the players are determined, and in the way the format is played. The tournament draw consists of only the top eight singles players and the top four doubles teams from the 2009 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour season. They now compete for the coveted Sony Ericsson Championships title and a share of the record $4.55 million prize money. Prize money like that would make all the hard work of the past season really worth the effort.
Jankovic seeded No. 1 for Australian Open
Serbian tennis cutie pie, Jelena Jankovic, has received the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Australian Open slated to begin Jan 19 in Sidney. As the current No. 1 ranked female tennis player in the world, it makes sense to seed her No. 1 in the first Grand Slam of the year. Jankovic reached the semifinals of the Australian Open last year.
Noticeably absent from the tournament this year are No. 9 ranked Maria Sharapova due to a lingering shoulder problem, and No. 28 Na Li of China, because of a knee injury.
Listed below are all 32 seeds for the 2009 Australian Open.
Ana Ivanovic will be hot!!! in the U.S. Open
Serbian tennis cutie pie, Ana Ivanovic, will be hot in the U.S. Open. Why? Because she’s always hot! See the photo to the left for a good example.
Ana Ivanovic is seeded # 1 in the U.S. Open being played at Flushing Meadows, New York, USA starting this week. That’s only right that she is seeded # 1 in the U.S. Open since she is ranked # 1 in the world WTA rankings. Since she is steamy hot, seeded # 1, and ranked # 1, she’s gotta be hot in this tournament. No doubt about it!
Anna Chakvetadze loses in final of 2008 Pilot Pen
Tennis cutie pie, Anna Chakvetadze, of Russia is shown here in her Quarterfinal match of the 2008 WTA Tour Pilot Pen tennis tournament at New Haven, Connecticut, USA. She made a good run, losing out in the Final match against Caroline Wozniacki.
Anna Chakvetadze was the # 1 seed in the tournament. She had a 1st round bye, then defeated 44th ranked Casey Dellacqua of Australia 6-4, 6-4 in the 2nd round to move to the Quarterfinals. In the Quarterfinals she faced Romanian, Sorana-Mihaela Cirstea, winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Patty Schnyder loses 2nd round of 2008 Pilot Pen
Swiss cutie pie, Patty Schnyder, is out of the 2008 WTA Tour Pilot Pen tennis tournament being held in New Haven, Connecticut, USA Aug. 18-24 after a 2nd round loss to 33rd ranked Amelie Mauresmo of France.
Patty Schnyder had won her 1st round match against Jill Craybas of the USA, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). It took a 2nd set tie-break to win the match. Against Mauresmo, the match went into a 3rd set tie-break. This tie-break was not so kind to Patty. She lost the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-7 (6-8).
Ana Ivanovic # 1 seed in 2008 WTA Rogers Cup
Serbian cutie pie, Ana Ivanovic, is seeded # 1 in the 2008 Roger Cup being played in Montreal, Canada July 28-Aug 3. She has a BYE in the 1st round, and will face 64th ranked Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic in the 2nd round.
Ana hopefully will get back on track. She is still my # 1 cutie pie, and is still ranked # 1 in the world, although Jelena Jankovic is closing the gap. Go Ana!
Caroline Wozniacki is 31st seed at Wimbledon
Danish cutie pie, Caroline Wozniacki is the lowest seed of our featured cutie pies who are playing Wimbledon this year. She is seeded 31st. She has a world ranking of 30.
Caroline is just 17 years old and has only played at Wimbledon once. Last year she lost in the 2nd round. She has comparatively much more experience that last year for her young age. So she may do much better this year.
Caroline will run up against 24-year-old Eva Hrdinova from the Czech Republic. Eva has never played at Wimbledon. Caroline’s one year of experience gives her a slight edge. I’m betting on Caroline.
Maria Kirilenko is 19th seed at Wimbledon
Russian cutie pie, Maria Kirilenko, is the 19th seed at the 2008 All England Lawn Tennis Championships. She is currently ranked 19th in the world.
Maria will make her 5th try to show her stuff at Wimbledon. She has not made it past the 2nd round in her previous four tries. The past two years she has lost in the 1st round. So it is time for her to prove she deserves her ranking.
Nicole Vaidisova seeded 18th at Wimbledon
Cutie pie, Nicole Vaidisova, is seeded 18th at the 2008 All England Lawn Tennis Championships beginning this week. Nicole is from the Czech Republic.
Nicole is currently ranked 22nd in the world. This will be her 4th appearance at Wimbledon. She reached the 3rd round in 05, the 4th round in 06, and the quarterfinals in 07. That must mean she’ll reach the semifinals this year.
Nicole’s first round opponent is 28-year-old Zuzana Ondraskova, also of the Czech Republic. Zuzana is ranked 184th in the world and has never made it past the 1st round in four tries at Wimbledon. So Nicole should have an easy first match. Go Nicole! Make it to the semifinals!
Patty Schnyder seeded 12th at Wimbledon
Patty Schnyder, cutie pie from Switzerland, is seeded 12th for the 2008 All England Lawn Tennis Championships.
This will be Patty’s 13th appearance at Wimbledon. She brings a lot of experience, but she has not typically done well. Her best was the third round up until last year when she made it into the fourth round. Perhaps she is on an upward swing.
Patty will face 23-year-old Casey Dellacqua of Australia. Casey is playing for only her second time at Wimbledon. Last year she lost in the first round. Patty should easily make it past this first round.
