Venus Williams sidelined for rest of 2010
No. 3 Venus Williams is done for the season because of a left knee injury that has sidelined her for most of the second half of 2010.
Williams has not played since the U.S. Open, where she lost in the semifinals to eventual champion Kim Clijsters.
She was to due to play in the China Open this week but withdrew because of her knee problems, raising doubts about her chances of playing in the Fed Cup final and the WTA Championships.
“I am very disappointed to announce that I will be unable to play in the season-ending WTA Championships and Fed Cup final,” she said in a statement.
Serena Williams pulls out of 2010 U.S. Open
World No. 1 Serena Williams will miss the 2010 U.S. Open due to injury.
On the advice of her doctors, top-ranked tennis star Serena Williams withdrew from the U.S. Open on Friday. The 28-year-old champion, who is still recovering from recent foot surgery, said in a written statement that she was pulling out of the tournament “with much frustration and deep sadness.”
Justine Henin calls it quits for 2010
Justine Henin has announced that she will miss the rest of the 2010 season as she recovers from an elbow injury.
The No. 14th ranked player from Belgium injured her elbow at Wimbledon in July, and said on her website she will not be able to practice again until October.
Henin, a seven-rime Grand Slam winner, returned to tennis at the beginning of this season after 18 months in retirement. She reached the final in her first two tournaments, including the Australian Open, and won titles in Stuttgart and Den Bosch.
Sharapova and Ivanovic suffer injuries in Cincinnati

Maria Sharapova of Russia and Ana Ivanovic of Serbia sustained foot injuries during the Cincinnati Open, both while playing against Kim Clijsters.
Sharapova, ranked No. 12, aggravated a heel injury in the championship match against Clijsters. “I felt some pain in my foot late in the second set which kind of scared me so I have been forced to pull out of Montreal,” Sharapova wrote on her official website. “I am hoping I just need a few days of rest.”
Clijsters had advanced after Ivanovic, ranked No. 39, retired from their semifinal matchup due to a foot injury.
Serena Williams to miss 3 events due to foot injury
Serena Williams, ranked No. 1 on the WTA Tour, is scheduled for surgery on her right foot after cutting it on a broken glass at a restaurant.
Serena was injured last week and will miss three tournaments leading up to the U.S. Open, the WTA Tour said Saturday.
She has withdrawn from tournaments in Istanbul, Cincinnati, and Montreal. The tour Website offered no details about what happened at the restaurant.
“I’m so upset I won’t be able to play in the upcoming events because of this foot surgery,” Serena said on the website. “Thank you for all of your support. I can’t wait to get back on the courts.”
Serena Williams is out of WTT
World No. 1, Serena Williams of the USA, will miss the entire 2010 World Team Tennis season.
Serena plays for the Washington Kastles, and was a vital part of the team in capturing the World Team Tennis Championship in 2009, and was scheduled to play four matches this season.
In a statement Monday, the WTT said that the current women’s No. 1 player will not be able to join her team to play her scheduled WTT matches after cutting her foot earlier this week The wound is reported to have required stitches.
Henin will miss U.S. Open due to partial ligament tear
Justine Henin, seven-time Grand Slam champion, and two-time U.S. Open champion, will miss the U.S. Open this year due to a partially torn ligament in her right elbow.
The injury came as the result of a fall in the 1st set of her 4th-round match on Monday against countrywoman Kim Clijsters. Justine went on to win that first set, but Kim won the final two sets. Score: 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Henin said on her website Thursday that the injury will keep her off the tour for about two months. She said she will miss the American hard-court circuit, including the U.S. Open, which she won in 2003 and 2007. The year’s last major tournament begins in New York on Aug. 30.
Safina pulls out of Wimbledon
Dinara Safina of Russia has decided to pull out of the 2010 Wimbledon, following the lead of countrywoman, Elena Dementieva who withdrew because of a calf injury on Tuesday.
“I had to pull out today,” tweeted Safina on her Twitter feed. “My back injury came back and I can’t play… I tried but I can’t…sorry.”
Safina’s exit from the Grand Slam opens the way for Stephanie Dubois of Canada to enter the draw as a lucky loser.
In 2009, Safina reached the semifinals of Wimbledon before being crushed by Venus Williams of the USA in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
Dementieva pulls out of Wimbledon
World number five, Elena Dementieva of Russia, has pulled out of Wimbledon due to an injury. The calf injury that forced Elena to quit her French Open semifinal against Italian Francesca Schiavone will cause her to miss this year’s Wimbledon which starts next Monday.
Elena announced on Tuesday on her Website that she hasn’t fully recovered from the problem and would skip the year’s third tennis major.
Elena reached the semifinals of Wimbledon the past two years. In 2008 she lost to Venus Williams who went on to win the title, and in 2009 she lost to Serena Williams who also went on to win the title.
Clijsters could miss French Open due to Injury
Just when everything seemed to be going her way, Kim Clijsters of Belgium may miss the French Open due to a foot injury.
Having come out of retirement recently, Clijsters surged back in the rankings to her current No. 11. However, she is out for up to six weeks after tearing a muscle in her left foot during a Fed Cup singles match against Estonia.
Clijsters beat Maret Ani 6-4, 6-2 Saturday despite discomfort in the foot. The bruising got more painful overnight, forcing her to pull out of Sunday’s second match. Tests at a hospital showed the muscle tear in her foot.
