Clijsters wins U.S. Open but drops two spots in rankings

Kim ClijstersYes, you read it correctly. In spite of winning the 2010 U.S. Open, one of the biggest events in the sport, Kim Clijsters slipped from No. 3 to No. 5 in the WTA rankings.

Here’s how that happened. Clijsters earned 2,000 rankings points for winning this year’s tournament, but it had no net effect on her old ranking because she was defending 2,000 points because of her win in 2009. No matter what she did in New York, she couldn’t earn any more points.

Serena Williams Ends 2009 At Controversial No. 1

Serena Williams photoAmidst controversy and spectacular play, Serena Williams of the United States ends 2009 ranked No. 1 in the world on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. Once before in her 14 year career she achieved the No. 1 year-end ranking, seven years ago in 2002.

Just three years ago, in 2006 she had dipped to No. 95 at year’s end following an injury-plagued season. She lost in the 3rd round at the Australian Open to Daniela Hantuchova. Williams then withdrew from all events until summer with a left knee injury, including Roland Garros and Wimbledon. She spent 18 weeks outside of the top 100 during that time. Then after starting up again, she lost at the U.S. Open in round four, ending the year at #95. In 2007 she started her climb back up the rankings, moving up to No. 7 at the end of the year, and finishing 2008, No. 3.[SonyEricssonWTATour.com]

Jankovic retains No. 1

Jelena Jankovic photoSerbian tennis cutie pie, Jelena Jankovic, continues to hold on to the top spot of the world rankings on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. This is an amazing feat, considering Jelena Jankovic has never won a Grand Slam title. In fact, she has only reached the finals once, which was this year at the US Open where she was defeated by Serena Williams in straight sets.

Yet her overall consistency is paying off. Jankovic has won four singles titles this year on the WTA Tour, including three in a row in September and October. That was a good run. However, in her last tournament, The WTA Zurich Open, she lost her first round in a 3-set match to No. 14 ranked Flavia Pennetta.

Jankovic returns to # 1

Jelena Jankovic photo Jelena Jankovic looks rather sexy sitting here by the piano. But she has been doing more than playing piano. She has been playing consistent enough tennis that she has regained the # 1 world ranking on the WTA tour.

Jankovic just won the 2008 WTA Tour Porsche Tennis Grand Prix played Sep. 29 – Oct. 5, 2008 in Stuttgart, Germany. She defeated Nadia Petrova of Russia 6-4, 6-3. That was enough to raise her above Serena Williams of the USA who was ranked # 1 last week. Serena dropped to # 2.

Ana Ivanovic drops to # 3

Ana Ivanovic photoSexy, Serbian tennis cutie pie, Ana Ivanovic, has dropped to # 3 on the world rankings as of 9/8/08. She had been ranked # 1 the previous week.

Getting beat in the second round of the U.S. Open hurt Ana Ivanovic’s ranking. The world # 1 should not be defeated by someone like Julie Coin of France who was ranked 188th in the world, a qualifier who was playing in her first ever Grand Slam event, and first event on the WTA Tour. No top seeded women’s player had ever lost this early in the U.S. Open.
