Sharapova and Jankovic survive scares in1st round at U.S. Open

Maria SharapovaNo. 14 seed, Maria Sharapova, survived a 3-set scare in her match against No. 60 ranked, Jarmila Groth, while 4th seed, Jelena Jankovic was given a huge scare by 18-year-old Romanian Simona Halep.

Sharapova overcame a deficit and a big-hitting opponent to avoid a significant upset in the first round of the U.S. Open.

Sharapova, the 2006 champion at Flushing Meadows, played solidly and often safely while putting together a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over 60th-ranked Jarmila Groth of Australia on Tuesday.

Wozniacki seeded No. 1 at Open; Clijsters No. 2

Caroline Wozniacki Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark is seeded No. 1 at the U.S. Open, followed by No. 2 Kim Clijsters of Belgium.

It is the first time Wozniacki was seeded No. 1 at a Grand Slam tournament, a spot which she filled in after world No. 1 Serena Williams of the U.S.A. pulled out of the tournament, saying she still is recovering from surgery to repair cuts on her right foot.

Wozniacki, ranked No. 2 behind Williams by the WTA, was the runner-up at Flushing Meadows last year and is the first woman since 2003 to be seeded No. 1 at the U.S. Open without already having won a major championship.

Top-seeded Jankovic ousted by qualifier Benesova

Iveta BenesovaJelena JankovicQualifier Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic ousted top-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia Tuesday night in the 2nd round of the 2010 WTA Rogers Cup in Montreal, Canada.

This win over No. 3 ranked Jankovic in straight sets, 7-6(3), 6-3, was the biggest victory of Benesova’s career. After the match she said: “It was almost a perfect match for me… I was in the zone and focused on my game.” Her previous best win was over then No. 10 ranked Vera Zvonareva in 2005.

Jankovic has played only four matches in three tournaments this month after missing two weeks with an ankle injury she claims is completely recovered.

Clijsters advances to Quarterfinals with win over Henin

Kim ClijstersIn a 4th round battle of Belgian countrywomen seeking their first Wimbledon championship, No. 8 seed, Kim Clijsters advanced to keep her hopes alive winning over No. 17 seed, Justine Henin 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 at Wimbledon 2010.

Kim had to fight back from down a set. She won the 2nd set, then made a decisive break in the eighth game of the final set after Justine overhit a forehand, then served out the match. Justine received treatment on her elbow after injuring a tendon when she fell while lunging for a shot early in the first set.

Venus Williams cruises into 4th round

Venus WilliamsFive-time Wimbledon champion, and current World No. 2, Venus Williams, advanced to the 4th round of Wimbledon 2010 without really being challenged.

Her victims have been , 6-3, 6-2, Ekaterina Makarova, 6-0, 6-4, Alisa Kleybanova, 6-4, 6-2.

Venus’ next opponent will be No. 92 ranked Jarmila Groth.

Venus has had a rather easy draw. Looking ahead if she wins her next two matches, she could face Jelena Jankovic, Kim Clijsters, or Justine Henin in the semifinals.

Jelena JankovicFourth seed and former No. 1, Jelena Jankovic of Serbia posted an easy win over No. 29 seed, Alona Bondarenko of the Ukraine Friday, 6-0, 6-3 to gain a berth in round 4 at Wimbledon 2010.

Stosur upset by Kanepi at Wimbledon

Samantha StosurFrench Open runner up, Samantha Stosur of Australia, is already packing to go home after a 1st-round loss at Wimbledon on Tuesday. The lady who sent her packing is 80th-ranked qualifier, Kaia Kanepi of Estonia, who took care of the upset in stunning fashion in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

This was the fourth first-round exit in eight appearances at the All England Club for the sixth-seeded Samantha. She came to Wimbledon with a tour-leading 35 match wins in 2010 and with her career-best ranking. She reached her first Grand Slam final at the French Open this month, beating current No. 1 Serena Williams and former World No. 1 Justine Henin and another former World No. 1 Jelena Jankovic along the way.

Serena WilliamsAccording to OnTheBaseline, the No. 1 ranking is up for grabs at Wimbledon. Serena Williams could theoretically be dethroned by No. 3, Jelena Jankovic, by her sister, Venus Williams ranked No. 2, by Caroline Wozniacki ranked No. 4, or even by Samantha Stosur ranked No. 6. Elena Dementieva is currently ranked No. 5, but is not playing Wimbledon due to an injury.

With Serena being the defending champion, she has all her points to defend. Stay tuned to Wimbledon 2010. It could get interesting!

Stosur destroys Jankovic to gain berth in Final

Samantha Stosur Samantha Stosur, the 7th seed from Australia, totally dominated 4th seed, Jelena Jankovic of Serbia in the 2010 French Open semifinals, winning 6-1, 6-2.

It was Samantha’s third straight win over a player who has held the #1 ranking. She defeated 4-time French Open champion and former #1 Justine Henin of Belgium in the 4th round, and 2002 Roland Garros champ and current #1 Serena Williams of the USA.

Stosur stuns Serena Williams at French Open

Samantha StosurNo. 7 seed, Samantha Stosur of Australia stunned the tennis world by taking out World No. 1 Serena Williams of the USA in a 3-set thriller, 6-2, 6-7(2), 8-6 in a quarterfinal match at the 2010 French Open in Paris.

Samantha came out strong, dominating play on her serve and against Serena’s serve. Samantha played patiently, slicing her backhand deep, waiting for the short one which she could put away with her powerful forehand. Serena was obviously frustrated throughout the match with Samantha’s backhand slice.
