Lindsay Davenport wins doubles in her first tournament since 2008

Lindsay Davenport, playing in her first WTA tournament since the 2008 U.S. Open, has won the doubles title in the 2010 Bank of the West Classic at Stanford, California, USA, on Sunday afternoon.

She teamed up with Liezel Huber and defeated Yung-Jan Chan and Jie Zheng in the final Aug. 1, 7-5, 6-7 (8), (10-8).

Playing together for just the second time since teaming up for a quarterfinal showing at the 2008 Olympics, Davenport and Huber padded their impressive career doubles marks with the victory. Davenport has now won 38 career doubles titles overall while Huber has claimed 43 career championships.

Lindsay Davenport coming out of retirement to play at Wimbledon

Former World No. 1 Lindsay Davenport of the USA announced last week that she would be coming out of retirement to play in two WTA Tour events.

She’ll be playing in the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford University in the final week of July, and the Mercury Insurance Open in La Costa, California in August.

At age 34, Davenport hasn’t played in a tournament since the 2008 U.S. Open and claims that she’s not coming back, just playing for fun. She stated:

Serena and Venus Williams Earn Tennis World No. 1 Doubles Ranking

Serena and Venus Williams of the USA will ascend to the top of the doubles rankings next week, the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour announced on Wednesday. Serena will also become the sixth player in Tour history to hold the No. 1 ranking in both singles and doubles simultaneously.

Following their Roland Garros semifinal victory against Liezel Huber and Anabel Medina Garrigues, Serena and Venus will climb to the top of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Doubles Rankings (as of June 7, 2010) for the first time in their career. They are currently ranked World No. 1 and 2, respectively, on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Singles Rankings, but will be joint doubles No. 1.

U.S. Seals Berth in Fed Cup Final

Bethanie Mattek-Sands celebrates at the end of her 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 match against Ekaterina Makarova in their Fed Cup singles match Sunday, April 25. Her victory kept the United States’ Fed Cup title hopes alive tying the semifinal matchup with Russia at 2-2.

That brought it down to a decisive doubles match with Mattek-Sands teaming up with Liezel Huber against the Russian team of Elena Dementieva and Alla Kudryavtseva.
