Wozniacki crushes King in 2nd round at Australian Open
World No. 1, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, seems intent on proving to a skeptical world that she is indeed deserving of her ranking as she cruised easily through her first two rounds at the 2011 Australian Open without dropping a set.
Caroline lost only one game in her 2nd round match on Wednesday, destroying Vania King of the USA, 6-1, 6-0.
Caroline hit 23 winners and only 8 unforced errors, a ratio of nearly 3 to 1, rarely achieved in “modern” tennis. Vania hit 10 winners, with 20 errors.
Hantuchova sends Safina packing in 1st round at U.S. Open
No. 24 seed, Daniela Hantuchova downed former World No. 1 Dinara Safina in the first round of the 2010 U.S. Open at Flushing Meadows.
Safina was the top seed here last year, but was eliminated in the 3rd round. She has been plagued by a back injury which has forced her to miss almost three months of the 2010 season, including Wimbledon. She reached the World No. 1 ranking in April of 2009, but her ranking has now dropped to 50th in the world in just over a year. She has yet to win a Grand Slam tournament.
Serena Williams Cements No. 1 World Ranking With Championship At Doha
Serena Williams solidified her World No. 1 ranking by winning the Sony Ericsson Championships on Sunday, November 1, 2009 in Doha, Qatar. She claimed the championship with a straight-sets win over her sister, Venus Williams, and a 5-0 record for the tournament. Venus was back to defend her title from last year, but Serena made sure that did not happen.
The Final was competitive between the two sisters. However, both were struggling with injuries and had heavy taping on their left legs. Serena was dominate in the opening set, winning 6-2. Venus then stepped up her game in the second set, managing to force a tiebreak. However, Serena came out on top, winning the match 6-2, 7-6(4).
