I didn’t catch any of the early parts of this match, but Querrey had a 2 set to 1 lead, but then lost the fourth set, 6-1.  When I saw the fifth set, both were on serve, but Kubot seemed more aggressive, especially on return.  Querrey escaped a few tough service games, but it generally looked like he was a little gassed, lacking the intensity to take over points.

Querrey was half-volleying deep shots at the baseline when Kubot would attack.  Kubot has been on the tour a while and is 28 years old.  In general, many of the unknowns are older players that have learned to be savvier as they get older (and haven’t dropped off the tour).

Monfils-de Bakker was a tough opening round.  de Bakker took the first two sets, and Monfils took the next two.  He’s up a break in the third set.

Fish-Hanescu was a tough opener too.  Hanescu has been ranked higher enough to be seeded.  Fish lost the first two sets, won the third, is up a break in the third, but he’ll need to work hard to avoid being the second prominent American out.

Ryan Harrison has already dropped the first two sets to Mannarino of France.  Harrison is a wildcard.

Dayvdenko split sets with Florian Mayer, but is down a break in the third.  Mayer made the semifinals of Sydney, so he’s playing well, but Davydenko made the semis of Doha, though he struggled in an exhibition in Kooyoung, losing to Melzer in a relegation third vs fourth place match.

Gil and Cuevas are in a fifth set.  Kamke had an easy first set over Kohlschreiber (both are German).

Juan Monaco, Kei Nishikori, Robin Haase, Sergiy Stakhovsky, and Igor Kunitsyn won first round matches too.

Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, Nicolas Almagro, Ivan Ljubicic are all scheduled to play today.
