Serena Williams photo Serena Williams of the USA holds the Wimbledon trophy for the 3rd time in her tennis career after defeating her sister, Venus Williams, in the final July 4, 2009. Serena didn’t show much mercy as she downed her overpowered sister in straight sets, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.

It was probably sweet revenge for Serena after being defeated by Venus in last year’s final. The 2008 Wimbledon championship was Venus’ second in a row. This makes eight championships by the Williams sisters in the past 10 years. That’s domination, almost a dynasty!

Serena’s previous wins came in 2002 and 2003, leaving a long six years between wins. This win gave Serena her 11th Grand Slam singles title. She has won the Australian Open four times, including this year, one French Open, three Wimbledons, and three US Opens.

With two Grand Slams already this year, Serena looks like a favorite to defend her crown at the US Open which she won in 2008. I can’t think of anyone who could beat her the way she played the final at Wimbledon. Elena Dementieva played her close in the Semifinal at Wimbledon, but Dementieva has yet to win a Grand Slam and has not made it past the Semifinals at the US Open in the last four years. So the experience of Serena gives her a big edge. The same could be said for the current world’s No. 1, Dinara Safina. She has not yet won a Grand Slam, and her best showing was the Semifinals at the US Open last year. Again, Serena’s experience makes her the favorite.
