Roger Federer

Basel/Valencia Finals

Roger Federer was coming into the finals having won three straight titles at Basel and hoping to win a fourth.  Compared to other years, Federer lacked the match practice he would normally have.  Federer hadn't played a match since the Davis Cup tie a week after the US Open, resting and practicing and presumably handling

Basel/Valencia Semis

Perhaps the match that most fans remember between Andy Murray and Fernando Verdasco was the epic quarterfinal meeting at the Australian Open.  This match had a weird final score: 2-6, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.  Murray had not been feeling well during the Australian Open, reporting that he was mostly bed-ridden.  Even so, he gave Verdasco

Basel/Valencia Midweek Update

When the weather turns cold, American fans turn to cold weather sports.  Even ardent fans of tennis forget there are matches played after the US Open.  It's time for college football or pro football.  It's time for baseball season to go into postseason.  It's time for hockey season to get started.  Indeed, these sports remind

Federer and Murray Return

Andy Murray hadn't played since the US Open.  Roger Federer hadn't played since a Davis Cup qualifying tie against Italy where he played two singles matches.  Murray cited a left wrist injury which impacted his plat at the US Open.  Federer cited injury and fatigue, and presumably, fatherhood. While the remaining players on tour continued

St. Petersburg/Vienna/Lyon Wrap-up

After the Asian swing, the men's tour moved to Europe.  Last week, events were held in Moscow and Stockholm.  This week, there were three tournaments played at the same time: St. Petersburg, Vienna, and Lyon. These are the kinds of tournaments that allow players not named Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray a chance at the

Two ATP 500 events just concluded this past Sunday.  One was held in Tokyo, Japan where Juan Martin del Potro was the top seed when both Roger Federer and Andy Murray skipped to recover from injuries and fatigue. Since del Potro lost early, this left the talented Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga as the highest seed remaining

What a difference a year makes.  Last year, Gilles Simon won 3 tournaments and played very solid tennis starting just before the US Open until the end of the year.  His ranking went up to the top 10 and he managed to get into the year-end Masters championships in Shanghai when an injured Rafael Nadal

Nadal Returns

Rafael Nadal has had quite the summer.  Having been undefeated at the French Open, he suffered his first loss ever to unheralded Swede, Robin Soderling.  Afterwards, he decided not to defend his Wimbledon title and let his knees heal so he could play the US Open, the one major he had not won, and and

US Open Wrap-up

This year, the US Open brought with it a lot of questions.  Could Roger Federer win his 6th straight US Open and 16th Grand Slam title?  Could Andy Roddick return from a good, but not great hard court season where he lost twice to del Potro and once to Querrey?  Was Sam Querrey ready to

Day 12: Rained Out

Last year, with rain imminent on Super Saturday, tournament officials moved the first semifinals to 11 AM.  When it looked like it wasn't possibly to wait until the conclusion of the first semifinal to finish, they started the second semifinal in an adjoining court at 12:30 AM.  That match featured Andy Murray playing Rafael Nadal.
