Andy Roddick might love nothing more than to have a Jimmy Connors-like run through the US Open.  One might never see a 39 year old make a deep run in a Slam again, though as recently as 2005, Andre Agassi, in his mid 30s, made a run to the finals.  Roddick just turned 30 years old.  Even so, with such a dominant top 4, a deep run by someone older that (not named Federer) seems unlikely.

Roddick played the flamboyant Fabio Fognini who gave Roddick a lot more trouble than Tomic who just went away in Roddick’s previous match.  Although Roddick got a good start with an early break, Fognini came back.  Roddick needed a late break to win the first set and had to win a tiebreak to win the second set.  Roddick couldn’t relax because Fognini took the third set.  The fourth set was fairly close until Roddick got a late break and served out the match.

At roughly the same time this match was being played, David Ferrer, the fourth seed was playing Lleyton Hewitt.  Hewitt was giving Ferrer all he could handle.  Hewitt can still produce nice angles and has some pop on his serve.  But Ferrer has been top 4 for a long time and knows how to play a variety of players from the big boomers to the steady players.  The first set went to a tiebreak that went back and forth before Ferrer eked out the win.  Hewitt took the second set.  Ferrer the third, and then ran away with the fourth.  Hewitt may have had some ankle injury, but did his best anyway.

Richard Gasquet played his second collegiate American in a row.  Steve Johnson is a two-time NCAA champ.  Johnson had beaten Gulbis and fellow American, Rajeev Ram, but his road ended against the Frenchman.  He played a close tiebreak in the first set, but it wasn’t so close after that.

Novak Djokovic continued to steamroll with few problems as he beat Julien Benneteau 63 62 62.  Juan Martin del Potro becomes the last Argentine standing as all Argentines were in his bracket.  del Potro beat Leonardo Mayer in straight sets, but the third set was a close tiebreak that he won 11-9.

Wawrinka continues his good play and easily beat Alexandr Dolgopolov, 64 64 62.

There’s rain falling, but the last match of the day is John Isner taking on German, Philipp Kohlschreiber.
