Many people assume that the best way to throw a football “spiral” is to turn their hand to the inside as they release the ball – just like they think “carving” around the side of a tennis ball will give them a great slice serve.

Both are false!

In this video I explain (and show) exactly what I mean and use some of the best quarterbacks of all time as examples – Joe Montana and Drew Brees.

Video clips referenced in this lesson:

Joe Montana in an instructional video talking about how to throw a spiral correctly. He describes “turning the thumb down” and rotating the hand: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bFa7adgSfc

Drew Brees in an awesome “Sports Science” piece where he tests his accuracy against an Olympic archer. This is one of the best slow motion football throws out there on the internet: http://youtu.be/c6EguTZFK5s?t=4m23s
