Samantha StosurElena DementievaNo. 5 seed, Samantha Stosur and No. 12 seed, Elena Dementieva both advanced with straight-sets wins and will meet in the 4th round of the 2010 U.S. Open.

Stosur of Australia breezed through quite easily over No. 37 ranked Sara Errani of Italy 6-2, 6-3. Stosur came close to losing her 1st round match against Elena Vesnina, 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-1, but won easily in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Afterwards, Stosur said: “Really happy with that win. Since my first round I think I’ve played two really good matches now. Couldn’t ask for much more… to come through and have two matches the way I have, I’m really pleased.”

Meanwhile, Dementieva of Russia struggled in her first set against No. 24 seed, Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia. Dementieva trailed 2-5 at the start of the match, then won 5 straight games to take the 1st set 7-5, and closed out the second set at 6-2.

After the match, Dementieva said: “I have feeling that the center

[Ashe] court is a bit faster than the outside courts. Even with the warmup today on the center court, it really took me some time to get used to the surface. I was able to come back after 5-2, and that was the key to the match. I started to play a more aggressive match, and started to play much better tennis.”

Dementieva will play Stosur in the 4th round on Sunday. Dementieva leads Stosur 4-1 in career matches, and 4-0 on hardcourts. They have not played since last year, when, on a Deco-Turf hardcourt in the quarterfinals in Toronto, Dementieva defeated Stosur 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-3. Stosur’s win over Dementieva was in their previous match, on red clay in the 3rd round of last year’s French Open, when Stosur defeated Dementieva 3-6, 6-4, 1-6.
