Samantha Stosur of Australia, completely dominated Serena Williams of the USA to claim the 2011 U.S. Open championship in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

Playing in only her 2nd Grand Slam final, Samantha pulled off what many would consider a big upset over 3-time U.S. Open champion, 13-time Grand Slam champion, Serena. It is the first career Grand Slam title for Samantha.

Samantha came out on fire, scoring on 5 of 9 break points, while Serena was able to convert on only 1 of 5 break points. She took the first set easily, leaving Serena looking half-asleep. The second set started off the same until an early controversial break-point when Serena yelled out a loud “come-on” after hitting the ball but just before Samantha hit the ball off the tip of her racquet out of bounds. The chair umpire made a correct call and gave Samantha the point, which also gave her the game. That sent Serena into a tirade reminiscent of, but not quite as bad, as her tirade two years ago at the same tournament. That gave Serena a boost of energy, it seemed, and Samantha lost a little momentum. But Samantha picked it up again, closing out the set at 6-3 for a surprisingly lopsided upset for her first Grand Slam title.
